“honor killing,” a life lost

“Her crime was to fall in love. She paid with her life”

I cried when I read this. And to think that love is supposed to overcome anything. Sometimes I really wonder if it makes sense to let a religion guide your life like this.

I want to do something about this. I promise that I will, perhaps not now, but I will do something to help people like Rand.

Holy crap~!! (Hi Anna~ :3) Last time I checked, love wasn’t a crime…This is just ridiculous..I’m not stepping on the wrong foot about Iraqis here, since I would like to suppose not all are liek that - but that is NOT cleansing your honour or whatever that bs was…Poor girl..;___; ♥

(^) Hi Seji ^^ I think it’s the romantic inside of me that’s making me cry over this. Can’t bear to read about unhappy endings to love stories, especially one so brutal. I honestly don’t know how a father can kill his own child - is your own daughter not worth the same as your faith just because she is female? If so, then I really don’t think he deserves to have a faith at all.

Isn’t this sad? I cried when I read about how close their relationship was… the teddy bear part just made me cry more. You know… I just wonder… what it might be like for us to date a non-Asian race. I remember my dad yelling at me ’cause I was once best friends with an Italian/Spanish guy. It was horrible. Now just reading about this, it’s scary to fall in love for those Muslim women, huh? But I remember learning in History class that Muslims tolerate all kinds of race and religion… so why did the law changed and forbade interracial/inter-religion relationships? It’s so horrible. =(

Hi Anna, i read the article and as a muslim myself, i’m ashamed at her father’s behaviour. Yes, in our religion, we’re not supposed to marry someone out of our religion. HOWEVER, in which case, Rand was only expressing her interest in Paul and wasn’t even thinking about marriage yet. THAT, i think her father misunderstood. Besides, her father would never know if they had decided to marry and Paul would then convert to be a Muslim too. I therefore think the father was being extremely unreasonable. Such ‘honor killing’ i think is so meaningless and it’s not even a matter of honor if you talk about it. And to kill your blood daughter in such a manner (not to mention how her father convinced the rest to join in) is a grave sin, especially when Rand didn’t do anything wrong but converse with Paul. The father would have to answer a whole deal of question when his time comes unfortunately..
Also, we Muslims have different divisions in terms of how strict we can go with our religion (we still have the same belief though). As for Iraqis, i think they are stricter with the rules of women not allowed to speak to men, but that, i’m not too sure. Nevertheless, it was definitely every unreasonable of her father to do such a thing…to eventually cause her death too.

PS: i’m sorry if i was ranting -.-

Krazim - Your father sounds very strict about these things. But I think if he sees his daughter really fall in love with a non-Asian, he will tolerate it, right? It makes me feel so fortunate to have parents like mine, who would never discourage me being friends or going out with a non-Asian. And I think if you take any pure religion, the intentions are all good, but people twist the original intent and make up certain beliefs and rules that are not part of the original doctrine. Take example, in Texas there is a group of people who call themselves Mormons, but the men there forces sex upon girls barely 15 years of age (they claim girls are adults at 15), and they even uses these girls and their children as a way to cheat their ways out of taxes and in turn makes tens of thousands of dollars in tax returns. I’m 100% sure that nowhere in the Mormon Bible does it say that you are allowed to do that.

Nadiah - I’m absolutely sure that not all Muslims are like that. I have a few Muslim friends, and none of them take his religion to the extreme like that. Killing your own daughter should be a crime, in any religion; the fact that he was released so soon tells you how far that section of Iraq takes this religion. At least I believe that when you die, you should have no regrets about anything you have done in your life and have no shame about your actions. He definitely has a lot to answer to when his time comes - how can a person’s heart be peaceful when he does something like this?

Definitely. Still, i think her father was being very unreasonable.. It’s something just not acceptable for anyone at all. And the way he killed his daughter.. So brutal. He does have a lot to answer for. .whatever.

I shall only reply with a verse from The Holy Quran.
“If a man kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (For ever): And the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him”
    (The Women) 4:93

I already tried going out with this guy that was 1/3 Japanese and the rest was… Cuban. Haha, that didn’t work. His ex-friend and he were almost pissing in their pants when they saw my dad which caused him to break up with me ’cause of that reason. So… uhh… I think I’m gonna stick with my fangirlism for now. XD

That’s really sad and disturbing. :(

I guess different cultures have really different ways, but I don’t understand anyone who would kill his own child so brutally, and for such a reason.

HIS honour. Who gives crap about his honour? And her brothers, who didn’t help…

I usually try to respect other people’s views and traditions but you shouldn’t murder people in such ways.

AND not get in trouble for it.

Hi there, I just happened to pass through your site and read this. I got really interested in it and did some research and it shocked me to find that thousands of women across the world die almost daily for reasons as devoice, refusal of arranged marriage, or fall in love with other races/religions. I’m actually going to do this topic for one of my project in school, I think people should be aware of this so called honor killing, and how wrong it is.

Jenny - Hey, it’s awesome that you are interested in this subject! I definitely believe what your research found out. Good luck with your project - it’s wonderful to raise awareness about these issues.
