This almost seems like old news now, but on Monday afternoon, May 12, China’s southwestern Sichuan Province was hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that resulted in 1,200 death (to date). Many building collapsed, and since it was during daytime, a lot of students were buried under their school buildings. It is at this time that we truly see the brotherhood and love between citizens of a nation.
A child was crying at the sight of the earthquake, and Chairman Hu Jintao, always the first to visit victims of any disaster, hugged the child, calmed him and stopped his tears, but when the Chairman turned around, there were tears in his eyes.
Two juniors in a high school that collapsed due to the earthquake escaped from under the rubbles but immediately went back and rescued more than thirty people, despite the possibility of the return of more earthquakes. When TV personnels interviewed them, they were on the verdge of tears. I could see the fear in their eyes, that they feared the earthquake returning, killing more people, but that didn’t matter - there are their classmates under the rubble.
An old homeless man who picks trash for a living survived the earthquake, and afterwards used plastic bags and bottles that he picked up before to make a rope that rescued twenty people. No one ever saw the homeless man afterwards.
What is love? What is brotherhood? This is love. This is brotherhood. This is the care one Chinese person has for another. Every photo of injured children makes me wish that I am a part of the rescue effort. Every article about another brave individual rescuing others before himself makes me proud of my country and my fellow countryman. I am convinced that there is a reason to be proud of China, always.
Please donate to China’s earthquake relief through the American Red Cross here. I am actually the president of a club at my high school that raises money for children’s education in war-conflicted countries, but since this recent disaster just came about, and numerous kids are without school now in China, I think I might go ahead and donate some of our funds to this.
I’m so happy that many people I know online are trying to or have already donated to the earthquake relief in China. What touched me most was a story about an ordinary Chinese couple. They had a fight because the husband wanted to first donate $50,000 because he was so concerned about the people who were hurt and then go donate blood. The wife said that everything needs a limit and that they can’t afford to give that much, and couple of thousand would be okay. The husband said that if his wife won’t let him donate the family’s money, he’ll go take out a loan in order to help the unfortunate people whose life has been crushed by the earthquake.
China Jia You. We can endure it.

中国加油!
I’d been reading those reports, and crying while I read. My heart really hearts for China. But I’m sure that, strong as we are, we can overcome this disaster.
But it’s a lot more than 1,200 who died. Currently, the confirmed official death toll is at 19,509, but there are fears that the numbers may soar to 50,000.
aiya i heard about the earthquake! (although who hasn’t>) … it is so good that you are president of such a great club =D we have no such thing here
Cindy - wow, the death toll is that high now, and the predicted, Gosh, I don’t want to think about it. I just hope more people get rescued ASAP.
Lily - haha, you can start a club up! That’s what I did, we didn’t have that club until I started it my junior year
Initiative is a good thing XD
Ohh I didnt hear about this =( I hope people donate and help this tragedy.
OMG, I remember hearing an earthquake in China… and wow, so many rescues… but not quite enough. Very brave people though. Especially the homeless man. I really wanna meet him. I really do wish I can donate… but sucks, I’m… running low on money (nervous laugh)… and my dad’s not really happy about it… o.o; But I do hope when I come back in August, I’ll be able to donate?
